Jewelled Nelson Mandela

01 January 01

To celebrate Nelson Mandela's 94th birthday, a tutor from Birmingham City University made a unique piece of jewelled art as tribute. Tom Rucker, goldsmith and jewellery designer created this stunning statue, which was unveiled in Cape Town this year.

The statue took over a year to make and comprises of platinum, white porcelain, black rhodium and black diamonds. Tom, specialist tutor for Birmingham City University's School of Jewellery summer course programme, was inspired to create this following a trip to South Africa in 2009.

He spoke to local children and discovered that their hero was former President Nelson Mandela, which sparked the idea to create this statue in his honour. And what a sparkling idea it was!
