Introducing Heartsease, Ruth and Belinda's project, with Kids Company, to knit heart bags for children who need love
Ruth and Belinda have teamed up with Kids Company, ICHF and the UK Hand Knitting Association for a project to bring a little love into the lives of children who are, in Kids Company founder Camila Batmanghelidjh's words, '..not properly cared for'.
Ruth and Belinda came up with the idea of knitting little heart-shaped bags, where you could tuck in a message or treat, to help make a child feel loved, and the Heartsease project was born. Launching at the Creative Stiches and Hobbycrafts show in Manchester in February, they will be hosting 'real people/real time' knitting events providing patterns, yarn (and chocolates!) for people who want to take part. You will find them at the Fashion, Embroidery & Stitch show in Birmingham in March and Creative Stiches and Hobbycrafts in London in April too.
If you're not going to the shows but want to take part, don't worry, you can! There are two free pattern available on Ruth and Belinda's website here. One heart has a little pocket on the side where you can tuck in a message, a treat or present. The other has an open space at the top to do the same. The heart bags can be any size, colour, stitch or yarn and embellished with any buttons, ribbons and beads you fancy, and there's no limit on how many you make!
Send your hearts (as many as you want!) to:

All the bags will be presented to Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder of Kids Company, next February so you have a year to knit as many hearts as possible! Get going!
