Knitting 112 Yarn Review

Thursday, February 14, 2013

Jeanette Sloan looks at the latest yarns to whet your appetite.

1 King Cole Maxi- Lite

Maxi-Lite is a super chunky blend of 72% premium acrylic, 25% wool and 3% polyester. It's very softly twisted and has a slightly uneven texture that's wonderfully forgiving for the not-quite-perfect tension of new knitters. With a standard tension of 10 sts and 14 rows it's quick to knit on 10mm needles producing a soft, lightweight fabric with plump, textured stitches. As well as being warm to wear, it's excellent value for money per 100g ball and there are 12 great shades to choose from including shade Denim, shown here. Design support is available in a collection of eight classic designs for women, which includes a cabled sweater dress and a jacket worked in basket stitch. Gentle washing at 30˚c is recommended. It can also be tumble dried on a cool setting.

2 Blacker Swan Falkland Islands Wool DK

Blacker Swan Falkland Islands Wool DK is a collaboration between UK company Blacker Yarns and Swan Inlet Farm based in the Falkland Islands. Falkland farmed merino fleeces are blended with wool from Sue Blacker's black Blue-faced Leicester sheep and Shetland Moorit sheep from Somerset to create four natural coloured base shades; ivory, white, fawn and grey. Blacker Yarns then over dye the yarn to create a collection of 13 more beautiful shades, each with names inspired by wild flowers found in the Falklands such as the dusky pink Teaberry shown above. The resulting yarn is wonderfully soft, smooth to knit and has a multi tonal richness within each shade rather than being 'flat' in colour. It has excellent stitch definition and with a standard tension of 20 sts and 28 rows to 10cm you'll find no shortage of patterns to support it, although there are dedicated patterns available as both hard copies and downloads from the website. Cool hand washing at 40˚c is recommended.
