1 Rico Fashion Gigantic Mohair

Fashion Gigantic Mohair is an ultra soft blend of 40% acrylic, 30% mohair and 30% polyamide that is loosely knitted into a tubular structure. The result is a soft and chunky chainette yarn without too much mohair ‘haze’ that is wonderfully lightweight to wear. It knits up extremely quickly with a standard tension of 5 sts and 7 rows on 15-20mm needles so if you’re looking for quick results this could be the yarn for you. With a metreage of just 60m per 100g ball you may prefer to use it for key winter accessories and patterns for bobble hats, headbands, cowls and scarves are available. There are seven shades to choose from including shade 002 Beige, shown here. Hand washing is recommended; may also be dry cleaned with care but do not iron.

2 Rico Fashion Air Print

Fashion Air Print is a lightweight blend of 62% polyester, 28% acrylic and 10% wool that has a chainette construction and a gently blurred appearance. With a standard tension of 19 sts and 26 rows it knits as an Aran weight although the high synthetic content means it’s much lighter to wear than a pure wool yarn of equivalent weight. It has a subtle colouring which grades from one shade into the next creating an understated striped effect that, of course, works well in stocking stitch but also enhances simple lace and rib stitches. There are seven subtle colourways to choose from including shade 007 Multi Turquoise, shown here. Pattern support is available in a collection of loose leaflets featuring easy-to-wear women’s designs including cardigans and hooded sweaters. Gentle machine washing at 40°c is recommended, may also be dry cleaned but do not iron.

Kiko is a roving yarn that blends 51% wool with 49% acrylic. The result is a super chunky yarn with a gently felted quality that knits up quickly and evenly on 10mm needles. 4 Bergere de France Chatelle

5 Schachenmayr Scarlett

Chatelle is a blend of 89% acrylic, 8% polyamide and 3% polyester where a synthetic binder is wrapped around the plied yarns creating a soft handle yarn with a mottled appearance. Pattern support can be found in the Creations 2013/2014 booklet, which includes patterns for men, women and children each with signature design details that are classically Bergere de France. There are eight shades to choose from including shade 25352 Cordee, shown here. Gentle machine washing at 30°c is recommended, may also be dry cleaned but do not iron.

6 Rowan Kidsilk Amore

6 Rowan Kidsilk Amore

Kidsilk Amore is the latest addition to Rowan’s Kidsilk family. Made of the same blend of 70% mohair and 30% silk on which the range is based this yarn has a chainette construction and is luxuriously soft to knit. Because of the high mohair content the stitch definition is wonderfully blurred, which together with the graded colouring creates a softly striped effect when knitted. It has a standard tension of 7.5-9 sts and 10.5-12 rows depending on the size of needle used and with a relatively short metreage of 42m per ball it’s an ideal yarn for accessories. Although there are just four colours in the range the colourways have been designed by Kaffe Fassett so expect lots of colour as well as more subdued combinations of grey, lilac and teal in shade 506 Chiarosuro, shown here. A booklet of accessory designs is available priced at £5.95. Hand washing at 30°c is recommended; may also be dry cleaned.

7 Rowan Angora Haze

7 Rowan Angora Haze

Angora Haze is an indulgent blend of angora, polyamide and wool. The angora content, which gives the yarn its ultra soft handle, is sourced from French and Chinese breeds of Angora rabbits that is responsibly sourced from a few small farms in Italy. The fibres are collected by a combination of combing and shearing and, as this can be something of a contentious issue, Rowan are keen to stress that neither of these processes causes the animals any harm. The resulting yarn is lightweight and luxurious with a gentle halo and not too much ‘tickle’ or shedding of fibres. It has an excellent metreage of 137m per ball and knits to a 4 ply tension. The Angora Haze Collection, features 14 designs by Martin Storey ranging from garments to accessories worked in cable and lace combinations. There’s a choice of 13 shades from gentle pastels to jewel bright tones including shade 526 Embrace, shown here. Hand washing is recommended, may also be dry cleaned with care.
