Jeanette Sloan knits up the new season spring yarns

1. Sublime Lace

1 Sublime Lace

Spun from the softest extra fine Merino wool Sublime Lace is sure to be a hit with lace knitters everywhere. Although fine, it’s a strong yarn with a gently twisted construction and whilst I normally avoid lace yarns in favour of heavier weights I loved knitting with this yarn. It’s velvety soft and smooth to knit with, without splitting on the needles as you work. The resulting fabric is as light as air with a luxurious handle. Once blocked, it will beautifully reveal the most intricate of lace stitches although, of course, it will work equally well for simple garter stitch shawls too. The Sublime Extra Fine Merino Lace Accessories Book provides plenty of pattern support with 15 delicate designs including cowls, stoles, and of course shawls. There is a choice of eight shades available including the vibrant shade 401 Ikat, shown here. Gentle washing at 30°c is recommended, may also be dry cleaned with care.

2. DesignEtte Countess Silk

2 Design Ette Countess Silk

Countess Silk from Danish company DesignEtte is a luxuriously soft  100% silk roving yarn. It is an ideal yarn for those extra special ‘gift knits’ as it is sumptuously soft to the touch and has a brilliant lustre that will guarantee whatever you use it for will be treasured forever. Its excellent stitch definition makes it ideal for a variety of textures from stocking and garter stitch to lace patterns but given that it is a luxury unspun yarn you may prefer to use it for small projects or those that won’t require frequent cleaning. This a delightful yarn to knit with and there are three variegated colours available, Blue, Brown and Pink, shown here. Dry clean with care.

3. Rico Fashion Cotton Big

3 Rico Fashion Cotton Big

Multiple ends are plied together to produce Cotton Big, which is a beautifully rounded 100% cotton yarn. Knitting up smoothly with great stitch definition and a standard tension of 12 sts and 16 rows on 7mm needles, it’s a great yarn if you want quick results. Whilst some pure cotton yarns can feel quite rigid when knitted this one produces a soft, supple lightweight fabric that works equally well when used for crochet designs. For pattern inspiration there’s the Let’s Crochet Again book of mega crochet projects, which features over 40 patterns for home accessories including rugs, blankets, mug and tea cosies. There is a choice of eight shades, which includes gentle pastels as well as popping brights like the brilliantly vibrant shade 04, shown here. Gentle washing at 30°c is recommended, may also be dry cleaned but do not iron.

4. DesignEtte Denies

4 Design Ette Denies

Denies, is another buttery soft yarn from DesignEtte, a blend of cotton, viscose, polyester and polyamide. This mixture of fibres combined with its chainette construction gives the yarn a luxurious, light handle whilst tiny neon flecks scattered throughout the length of the yarn give it additional texture and colour. It’s a beautifully smooth yarn to work with, knitting up smoothly and evenly on 5mm needles producing a cool, lightweight fabric with excellent stitch definition and a gentle sheen. At the time of going to press there’s a choice of just two shades available, shade 121060 pure white or shade 121063 cream, shown here, and a new design called Moonlight will be available to buy from the website from the beginning of August. Hand washing at 30°c is recommended.

5. Rico Fashion Pixel

5 Rico Fashion Pixel

Pixel is a fab new DK weight yarn for spring/summer. It’s made up of a solid base colour twisted with three accent colours, which in turn are plied together to create a smooth, extremely strong yarn with an unusual pixelated effect, very much inspired by the digitial trend on the catwalks for S/S14. With such a gentle twist the yarn knits up to produce an impressively supple fabric that is soft to the touch with a slightly dry feel and, as you’d expect from Rico, it offers great value for money per 50g ball. Pattern support can be found in the Knitting Idea no 45 booklet which features casually styled sweaters and cardigans for both women and girls. With seven striking shades to choose from including shade 04, shown here, it will definitely appeal to both young and (dare I say) old alike. Gentle washing at 30°c is recommended, may also be dry cleaned.

8. Schachenmayr Ashana

8 Schachenmayr Ashana

If you’re looking for a quick addition to your holiday wardrobe then you’ll love Schachenmayr’s new Ashana. It’s a 100% cotton yarn with a loosely knitted chainette construction and a broken colour effect achieved by space dyeing the yarn before it’s knitted into a tube, which creates a gentle mottled effect when knitted up. This construction gives the resulting fabric an airy, soft handle with lovely big fat stitches and a gentle sheen. There is a choice of eight summery colour blends available, from the hot pink/orange hues of Fiesta Mix to the ice cool grey/green Mint Mix and the more unusual combination of slate/coral/pink in shade 083 Sunset Mix, shown here. The Inspirations no. 073 booklet offers plenty of pattern support and features over 12 ladies designs using both Ashana and Multicolour yarns all with a firm emphasis on casual styling.
