Knitting 113 Yarn Review

Friday, March 15, 2013

Jeanette Sloan tries out the new yarns for the new season.

1 Rowan All Seasons Chunky

As its name suggests, All Seasons Chunky is a heavier weight addition to the ever-popular All Seasons Cotton. Like its finer weight cousin, it is a softly spun blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic that knits up smoothly with well-defined stitches and lightweight results. It has a standard tension of 11 sts and 16 rows on 7mm needles, which makes it a quick knit and, as you'd expect from Rowan, there's a selection of 14 well chosen summery colours including shade 612 shown here. A new collection of patterns supporting this yarn can be found in the All Seasons Chunky Collection, which features openwork lace patterns and large scale cables. Machine washing at 40˚c on a gentle cycle is recommended.

2 SMC Multicolor

Multicolor is a 100% cotton yarn constructed of multiple ends of fine cotton that are plied and dyed along the length of the yarn. Once twisted together they create a multicoloured, well rounded yarn that is extremely strong, soft to the touch and cool to wear. It knits up relatively quickly on 3.5-4.5mm needles with a standard tension of 19 sts and 26 rows and the resulting colour effect is more randomly coloured than striped in appearance. There are eight shades to choose from, including the vibrant tones of Melon Mix, Sunset Mix and the more neutral Cloud Mix, shown here. Pattern support can be found in the Inspirations 053 booklet. Gentle, cold machine washing
at 30˚c is recommended.

4 Debbie Bliss Rialto DK Print

Rialto DK Print is a colourful new addition to Debbie's Rialto range. It's a 100% extra fine Merino wool yarn, which has the same roundness and bounce as the other weights but with several colour changes along the length of the yarn. These changes create striped bands when the yarn is knitted up adding some colour interest to the well-defined results. There are eight shades to choose from including shade 07 Napoli, shown here, and whilst it can obviously be used for the existing choice of Rialto DK patterns there is a new selection of designs for boys and girls in the Rialto DK Prints book. Being Superwash treated this yarn is machine washable at 30˚c on a gentle cycle.

5 Sirri Colour

Colour is an extremely strong yarn made purely from wool produced on the Faroe islands. It has a wonderfully rustic feel and smells authentically 'sheep like' which you'd expect from an additive free yarn that still contains its natural lanolin. This incredibly hard wearing yarn is available in a choice of 2, 3 or 5 ply construction (which translates to a Sport/Light DK, Aran and chunky weight respectively) and a great selection of over 20 shades from natural undyed to solid and variegated dyed colours including shade Teal, shown here. Whilst the recommended needle sizes may seem a little large for regular knitting, machine washing to felt the yarn (or to give it the correct name 'fulling') helps to creates a fabric that's truly wind and water resistant whilst retaining its softness and warmth. Washing at 40˚c is recommended.

Composition: 100% Faroese wool

Weight: 100g

Length: 165m

Rec needle size: 7-8mm

6 SMC Miracle

Miracle is a blend of 88% cotton and 12% polyester with a chainette construction. In terms of sparkle it has a much bolder appearance than previous yarns with a metallic thread, due to the higher content of metallic fibre, but this in no way affects the softness of the yarn. It knits up smoothly on 3.5-4.5mm needles with a standard tension of 20 sts and 28 rows creating a knitted fabric that has a dry handle and springy texture. Although it scores high in terms of 'bling' this yarn lends itself to both plain and patterned structures and pattern support can be found in the Inspirations 052 booklet. There are eight key shades to choose from including classic Black, Orange and shade 0036 Pink, shown here. Gentle, cold machine washing at 30˚c is recommended.

7 SMC Select Juliette

Juliette is a gently twisted 100% cotton yarn that glides beautifully through the fingers as you knit. It has a gently twisted construction, which, combined with a subtle lustre, results in a high quality yarn that produces bright, plump stitches. Ideal for both plain and rib-like structures it knits up quickly on 6mm needles to produce a smooth, soft fabric with chainmail-like handle. There are 16 shades available, from the softness of Mint and the spicy Cinnamon to the intense red of shade 02001 Cherry, shown here. 8 Sirdar Ella DK

Ella DK is a blend of 49% cotton, 48% acrylic and 3% polyester which brings a touch of glamour to Summer 2013. It has a plied construction and a dry, linen-like handle with a fine filament of metallic yarn twisting softly along the length of the yarn. This creates a more gentle glimmer effect rather than overt 'bling' so if lurex yarns aren't normally your thing you may want to give this one a try. It knits to a DK weight with a standard tension of 22 sts and 28 rows on 4mm needles, which means there's no shortage of patterns for you to try it out. There's also a new collection of feminine designs in the Ella DK book, which features pretty and glamorous cropped jackets, peplum cardies and delicate lace shawls. There are eight cool shades available with names evocative of summer including Clementine, Candy Pink and Pistache, shown here. Machine washing at 40˚c on a wool cycle is recommended.
