Jeanette Sloan reviews the new season yarns

1. Stylecraft Allsorts Super Chunky

1 Stylecraft Allsorts Super Chunky

Stylecraft Allsorts Super Chunky is an unusual yarn made from a blend of 68% acrylic, 18% wool, 14% nylon. It has a loosely knitted chainette construction but with the addition of a slubbed yarn which runs inside the tube creating lots of textural interest when the yarn is knitted up. It's quick to knit on 10mm needles with a standard tension of 9 sts and 13 rows and although thick, the resulting fabric is extremely lightweight which makes it ideal for both garments and small accessories. If you're a new knitter you'll like this yarn not only because it's quick to knit but also because the uneven texture will forgive any irregularities there may be in your tension. It's available in a choice of six shades including shade 1771 Smoke, shown here, and patterns for ladies and teens can be found in a range of leaflets priced around £3 each. Machine washing at 30˚c is recommended.

2. Stylecraft Senses

2 Stylecraft Senses

Stylecraft Senses is a 4 ply weight blend of 80% acrylic and 20% mohair, which has a plied construction and a slightly blurred appearance. The synthetic content gives the yarn a very lustrous appearance whilst the mohair adds a touch of warmth and a handle that's so soft you'd be forgiven for thinking the mohair content was higher. It has a subtle variegated colouring that works well for plain stitches as well as openwork lace stitches and even crochet. There are eight shades to choose from including the beautiful, delicate shade 2472 Lavender, shown here, and a selection of designs for women are available as individual patterns priced around £3 each. Machine washing at 30˚c is recommended, though it can
also be dry cleaned.

3. Rowan Lima Colour

3 Rowan Lima Colour

Lima Colour is a new addition to Rowan's Lima range that takes the same blend of 84% alpaca, 8% wool and 8% nylon and combines it with a graded colour effect. The result is a wonderfully soft yarn with a chainette construction that gently bleeds from one colour into the next along the length of the yarn and because the colour repeats are long the effect is very subtle rather than overtly striped like a sock yarn. Although it has a dense appearance this yarn produces a very lightweight fabric with a standard tension of 20 sts and 26 rows on a 5.5mm needle. There's a select palette of five shades to choose from including shade 714 Santiago, shown here. Cool hand washing at 30˚c is recommended, may also be dry cleaned.

Grace Harmonies is the latest addition to Louisa Harding's collection of Grace yarns. It's a blend of 50% silk, 50% Merino wool that is smooth and cord-like without being over twisted and knits up producing a beautifully soft fabric with a rich lustrous appearance. With inspiration for Louisa's autumn collection taken from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby there are eight tone-on-tone shades available with evocative names like Ragtime, Rhythm, and the deep jewel-like colouring of shade 6 Dizzy shown here. This luxurious yarn knits to a standard DK tension of 22 sts and 30 rows and can be used on its own or in combination with the other yarns from the Grace collection, which makes it even more versatile. It is available in a choice of ten classic, solid colours as well as six multicolour options, like shade 04845 Melody shown here, where the dye is applied to the surface of the yarn creating an irregular spray effect when knitted up.
